A few will be dropped, maybe one or two unexpected additions.
Of course, just as this is coming down the pike, the audio-in line on my laptop dies. So I'm still figuring out how to go about recording, as the built-in mike is whack.

Honestly, this project is getting on my nerves. I'm sick of most of the tracks on the album, and I haven't had the same enthusiasm that I went into it with. I guess that is to be expected, but it's tough when you're thinking about the next project before the current one is finished.

Anyway, keep an eye out. 5Limbs - Modulation will be dropping within the month, and you'll be able to get it from any of the various internet music stores, such as Apple.

ALSO- the first ten people to ask will get a free copy.

Happy 4th

It's been a little while...

After returning from a ridiculously amazing July 4th weekend, I've finished laying down 6 (s-i-x) new songs, and the album is closer to being completed than I imagined it would be at this point. The new stuff is really some of the best, in my opinion, and this album more than anything will chronicle my growing experience and skill with the electribe over the period of a year+. Whether that's what I intend it to be or not, it certainly sounds that way right now. In it's current demodemo incarnation, the record will have around 20 tracks on it and be somewhere around 50 minutes long. I may or may not add in some old recordings of me on the drums doing some semi-conceptual solo stuff... We'll see about that though. I'm not sure I want anyone to hear it.

Some new equipment to report: Garage Band 2 (laugh it up) and a new 1gb RAM chip in my powermac. The upgrade from 256 mb to 1 gb is really quite a large one, and the difference in user experience is very very noticible. Garage band 2 is still shitty old garage band, but at least they have a good bit reducing effect, which is really the only thing I use it for... That and the actual recording. The second 5 Limbs album will be a lot more high-tech, I promise.

GET READY! I'd say to expect the finished product by mid-August, maybe sooner.

Movement

So now that I'm somewhat settled into my father's apartment, it would be about time for me to get started writing again. Since the Katamari song I've really not written at all. I went into Guitar Center yesterday on my lunch break and played around with the electribe array they have set up there, and it was instant fun. I guess I'm letting it build up... or something.

I really don't want this stuff to be video game music. I want it to appeal to that, but not be it in its entirety. Maybe I should stop bit-reducing everything... But then again I do really love the way that sounds. I need to stop worrying about how it will be recieved and just finish this album and send it out, as a final product.

More to come.

Bullshit

my parents are moving and I am fucking pissed.

yeah, i know it's their prerogative. but it's mine to be fucking pissed.

Katamari Damacy? After some talking, we figured out that his drummer, Craig, started the Fauxfetus collective, for which I was originally making this album(!!!)

Craig contacted me probably a year ago to ask me to join Fauxfetus, and he told me to finish the album and send it in. They played at North Six, on N6th street in Williamsburg. I went with A.C.E. Love, Katherine Finkelstein, and Alex Morrison (no relation to Jim), and we all agreed afterwards that it was indeed a great show. They played mostly new stuff, the songs that aren't on any albums that I recognize from other shows, and also a few things I've never heard. And of course, they played the classics "Dracula Mountain", "Ride the Sky", and "Assassins".

If you didn't know it already, Lightning Bolt sets up on the floor instead of on the stage, which has a major effect on the overall mood and energy of the audience. That element, combined with the layout of the venue, always creates a different experience. This show was in that regard very much like the last LB show I saw at North Six: a little too crowded, a little overwhelming, very stuffy, and exhausting. For some reason they set up in the corner next to the stage, which forced the crowd to cram into a very tiny space to get close enough to see anything. It was too exhausting for me, and I let myself get pushed back until I had more room to flail around and more importantly breathe.

That aside, the show was on par with every other LB show I've ever seen: totally awesome. I must admit that they are a driving influence for me, mostly because of the energy that they generate. Their stuff is simultaneously techy and simple, confounded and also pretty straightforward. Sometimes Brian C. (the drummer) plays super fast, beyond belief or recognition, and then other times he plays the sweetest dance beats you've ever heard. That element is definitely something that I'm trying to channel through 5 Limbs: complicated yet highly accessible, both cool and nerdalicious. I want to achieve the perfect balance of hodge and podge, as the Discordians say. I think right now it's a little heavy on the hodge. Or maybe it's the podge... I'm not sure.

Well Hello There, Stranger!

Yes, I've finally jumped on the bandwagon. Or shall we say, the blogwagon...

This weblog will be all about me and my attempts to make and hopefully publish the music that I make on my electribe. I specifically work with the Korg EMX-1, which came out last year. It's a drum machine, sequencer, and 5 analog synths all in one little tube-driven blue box. I love this little thing, and with it in my lap I am no longer Greg Fox. I am...

5 Limbs.

So far the carreer of 5 Limbs has been rather limited. I was booked to play Fauxfest '04 in Philly, and I was supposed to be opening for Metalux, but that got cancelled. Other than that, there have been a few shows at Bard, some good (opening for Lightning Bolt) and some not so good (outdoors in the cold under a tent). But, now that school has ended for the summer, I've decided to get somewhat serious and make an attempt to sell some of this shit.

I also need some money.

Andrew Boatti brought CDBaby.com to my attention, which offers to distribute your music on all of the internet music stores for a $50 fee. That may sound somewhat steep, but I'll be making something like %60 on every purchase, and I don't have to sign any contracts with them that limit my ability to make any future releases with anybody else (if that ever even becomes an issue). It's honestly more of a push for me to stretch out on this machine and make something good, something that people other than my close friends can enjoy. And, if I can make a little bit of cash doing it, then that only sweetens the deal.

There really is a line though, between kitch and actual goodness. I know full well that the music I make has a nerd factor to it, that no matter what I do, the songs sound a little like video game music. Not to say that is anything bad, it's just not what I'm always going for. I'm trying to transcend that without losing it, lower the kitch factor slightly and pull something distinctive out of the muck that is my musical intention.

Wish me luck.
